Midwest DJ Throwdown 2011

It’s that time of the year again to have some fun at the Midwest DJ Throwdown.  This yearly competition has been going on for the past 3 years.  I was placed in the first bracket and I am happy to report that I came in first, hence winning my spot at the Finals on January 14th.  Much luck to all the contestants.  To those that win their individual brackets….see you in January!  :-)

Madeon

Came upon this amazing Disco House producer by ways of my good buddy DJ Protege.  The following video is one impressive example of what he does.  (Very GirlTalk-ish)  Enjoy!

Vegas, baby…VEGAS!

It’s that time of the year again… Bumsquad DJz Family Reunion!

As I must follow the unwritten rule of “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas”, I will have to omit certain stories and basically keep this post short.  I know I know, I apologize for this but that’s just the rule! :-p First of all, let me give a big shout out to my Bumsquad Family for another successful reunion.  I met many new DJ’s and Producers as well as reuniting with some old DJ friends from all over the country.  I flew in Monday morning and partied like a Rockstar (ok, more like a normal dude) for two nights.  Where to begin, where to begin…. (FYI, if this post sounds like a big name dropping post…….well it is, I have much love for all my DJ friends so I always make sure to mention them when possible so you can follow them whether on facebook or twitter!)

Monday:  Arrived in Las Vegas at 8a.m.  Ended up helping Latin Prince (Bumsquad President) and Elaine (VP) getting everything sorted and ready to go for registration.  This is where the Vegas adventures begins.  Ok, not to bore you with the daytime details, I’ll move on to the night’s festivities.  After heading to Planet Hollywood for the Bumsquad meetup at Yolos, DJ Antix and I decided to head over to TABU at the MGM Grand.  There we met up with DJ Mpulse, Ebonix, Serafin, Andrew B, Chris the Rebel, Fabian LV, Rockwell & Bizonee.  After chillin there for a bit some of us decided to head over to XS at Encore.  S/o to Andrew B for the hook-up for the quick entry into the club to see Fedde le Grand.  There we met up with pretty much the DMS record pool peeps.  Victor Menegaux, Danny Diggz, Kevin Scott, CEO, Serafin, Antix, Mpulse, Andrew B, and I … bottle service all around = Fuzzy Night.  Ending the night chatting up re-telling the evening’s adventures at McD’s with Antix, Serafin, Ebonix, Mpulse, Rockwell & Bizonee.

Inside jokes of the night: “Just living the Dream”  & “High-Five!”

Tuesday:  Fast forward to the night… Insert coins at the old strip to support Bumsquad and Smash Vidz.  Stayed there for a bit then jumped over to Moon at the Palms.  I wanted to go to Studio54 at the MGM Grand to say hi to DJ Scene but our open window to see Jazzy Jeff was closing so we all had to make a sacrifice.  Sorry buddy, you know I’ll be there next time!  Arriving at the Palms DJ Rocko, Danny West, Crumbz, and I headed up to Moon.  The incredible DJ Melo-D from the Beat Junkies was on the tables opening up.  So clean with his mixes.  Very nice guy, glad to of finally met him.

After some time, DJ’s seemed to of took over the place.  DJ CriscoKid, Phenom, Antix, Mpulse, Ebonix, Ill-Set, Danny West, Eddie Deville, Andrew B, Rocko, Crumbz, Rockwell, Flipz, CabezonMC, NeVaNeRvOuS, Bizonee…and the list keeps going. (I apologize if I missed someone)  Jazzy Jeff went on and like always, put on a turntablist style great show.  There is a reason why he is the “Magnificent” Jazzy Jeff.

Inside joke of the night:  “Hello Kitty”

Until next time Vegas!

DJ Serafin @ Haven

DJ Serafin @ Haven (Austin)

DJ Serafin @ Haven (Austin)

Oh what a night!  When you have to start a conversation or in this case, post… you can only imagine the shenanigan’s that must of happened.  I remember meeting DJ Serafin very briefly during 2010 WMC in Miami at a Crooklyn Clan after party.  Very cool dude back then, willing to take a photo op without flinching.  Fast forward one and a half year later and our paths crossed once again.  Sept. 24th he drove down with DJ Ebonix from Houston.  Picked both of them up from the hotel and headed downtown to get the night started.  DJ Ebonix was spinning at Suite 101 while Serafin was at Haven’s grand opening around the block.  It was his first time in Austin so after parking we all walked around the downtown area showing him around a bit.  Night progressed to shots and drinks at Suite101 to start it off.  Eventually making our way to Haven, only to find out how badly the opening DJ was burning Serafin.  Yeah, I’ll say it cause we were all thinking it.  Even non DJ’s were making statements about why the opener was playing the hot songs so early.  But that’s neither here nor there, a good headliner can roll with the punches and keep going regardless of the opener’s poor and unthoughtful song selection.  As I stated before, a good DJ can keep going un-phased and Serafin is such a DJ.  Needless to say he rocked the party like a true professional.  Jack bottle in hand we partied like 1999!  As a DJ he was very technical and definitely knew how to read the crowd.  Very fun and anitmated, I really enjoyed his show.  He projects a fun energy to his audience which only makes them party that much harder.  Having hung out with him I can say in and outside the club, Serafin is an uber cool guy.  Much respect to his hustle and his skills a s a producer/DJ.  I’m proud to be able to call this guy one of my DJ friends.

DJ Vice @ Teddy’s Room

Let me start by saying that in the entertainment industry we work in, egos are a reality that unfortunately exists.  Having said that… there exists some DJ’s who, regardless of their popularity and big name status, are still grounded, humble, and just plain cool people.  DJ Vice is definitely one of those DJ’s.  Last night at Teddy’s Room in Dallas, TX he was headlining the night.  As soon as he walked in you could feel the casual cool person he is.  Shaking hands with whomever approached and chatting up a storm with all of us.  DJ skills aside (cause we all know he definitely has them), Vice is a cool kat.  His set that night was awesome to say the least.  Just by saying that three songs into it, he had to club going bananas.  All in all, last night was a much needed night out with the buddies, it was awesome meeting some new people and most importantly catching up with DJ Vice.  Much respect to Vice for the work he puts in and the time he takes to appreciate everyone around him.

Napkin Notes

Gotta Love Napkin Notes

So another succesfull and fun night out at Cougar….errr…I mean Cool River.  This place never ceases to surprise me how an older crowd can sometimes party harder than a young crowd.  They love to dance like nobody is watching and drink like there is no tomorrow.  True Party People.  Now as far as the picture is concerned, I just thought it was funny because as a DJ…one has to be ready for all sorts of criticism and praise during the night.  Most of the time, this is expressed through the use of the all powerful Napkin Note.  This one in particular reassured me that I was doing my job as a DJ and not as a Jukebox.  Why yes lady, I AM cutting the cool songs about half way in.  Duh!  Now turn that frown upside-down and get back out there and dance just like everybody else is doing.  :-)

TGIW !!!

Holy mother of sweet baby jesus!  Last Wednesday’s Rock Island Live 4 turntable set with the homie DJ Carbon was on some other level.  The night started off nice and simple going with some good ol’ hip hop…and I mean GOOD hip hop, not commercial crap.  But as soon as I was called out for dropping Mann’s Return of the Macc track, did the night really begin…and it was only 10:15pm.  I will admit, I did not plan on playing that track but as I was running out of time I just dropped it in.  All I could see is DJ Carbon looking at me like … Really?!  LOL   I promptly switched it out and mixed in the Mark Morrison’s original.  From there on out it was ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!  I have to say that I vibe with DJ Carbon and I think that is what makes DJ’n with him extremely fun.  We did a 4 turntable set like it should be.  Not playing sets throughout the night but instead actually mixing in and out of each others music throughout the night.  Well, to keep this post short, I will sum up the night.  Fear not as I will update you readers with a more in depth play by play once I get the recording of the night uploaded for your ear luv-making pleasure.  Basically:  Daft Punk scratch set (sounded like we practiced it for months but it was impromptu), live freestyle rap by DJ Carbon on the mic while I blended the music, live hip-hop performance, and (even though I’m not a Dubstep fan) a cool as hell Dubstep set between DJ Carbon and I.  People loved it and we had a great time, can’t ask for much else.  Much love and thanks to DJ Carbon for having me out again.  I can’t wait till the next one….
